How to get a Wyoming driver's license
This is how Wyoming's graduated licensing works for teen drivers, based on WYDOT's Rules of the Road driver license manual (2021) and its Learner's Permit page. The manual itself says some information may be outdated, so check WYDOT's website for current fees and requirements before you go.
Get your learner's permit
At 15, visit a driver exam office with your documents and a parent or guardian's signature. Pass the written test and a vision screening. You can then drive with a licensed driver 18 or older in the front passenger seat.
Practice 50 hours
Hold the permit for at least 10 days and log 50 hours of behind-the-wheel driving, 10 of them at night, certified by a parent or guardian.
Get an intermediate permit
At 16, pass the driving skills test with Driver Services or an approved driver education program. The intermediate permit limits passengers and allows driving only from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. without an exception form.
Move to full privileges
At 17, or at 16 1/2 after six months on an intermediate permit and an approved driver education course, apply for full driving privileges.

Frequently asked questions
How old do you have to be for a Wyoming learner's permit?
15. You may drive only when a person 18 or older with a valid license for that type of vehicle sits in the front passenger seat. The permit is valid for one year and can be renewed as needed, and a parent or guardian must sign for applicants under 18. You have to hold it for at least 10 days before applying for more driving privileges.
What is on the Wyoming permit test?
The written test comes from the driver license manual. It covers traffic signs by shape, color, or symbol, signals and pavement markings, and multiple choice questions on traffic laws, safety rules, crash prevention, and vehicle equipment. You can take it twice in one day, and oral tests are available if you ask first. If you miss 13 or more questions, you wait three days to retest. WYDOT doesn't publish the number of questions or the passing score. You also need 20/40 vision with both eyes and a 120-degree field of vision.
How do I get an intermediate permit in Wyoming?
At 16, after holding a learner's permit for at least 10 days, you need 50 hours of behind-the-wheel driving, including 10 at night, certified by a parent or guardian. You then pass a vision screening and a driving skills test, either with Driver Services or through an approved driver education program, and a parent or guardian signs the application.
What are the rules for Wyoming intermediate drivers?
You may carry only one passenger under 18 who isn't in your immediate family, everyone must wear a seat belt, and you can drive only between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m. Trips outside those hours for work, school or a school activity, organized youth sports, a religious activity, or medical need require a signed exception form that you carry with you. Breaking the rules brings a 30-day suspension.
When can I get full driving privileges in Wyoming?
At 17. You can get them at 16 1/2 if you have held an intermediate permit for six months and finished an approved driver education course. An intermediate license expires 30 days after your 17th birthday.
Can 14- and 15-year-olds drive in Wyoming?
Only with a restricted hardship license approved by the Wyoming Highway Patrol, for example when the minor lives more than five miles from school. The license is valid only from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. and within 50 miles of home, and it is suspended after one moving violation.
