How to get a Montana driver's license
This is how Montana MVD describes the graduated license for drivers under 18, based on the Montana Driver Manual and MVD's page for teen drivers. Check mvdmt.gov for current fees and appointments before you go.
Get a learner permit
From 14½ through a state-approved traffic education program, or later at a driver exam station. Book an appointment for the written exam, bring proof of identity, residency and authorized presence, a parent's consent, and the fee.
Practice for at least six months
Log 50 hours of supervised driving, 10 of them at night, with a licensed parent, guardian or responsible adult. Keep your record clean for those six months.
Pass the drive test
Book a regular drive test and bring your documents, the driving log, your permit, the vehicle's registration and insurance, and the signed Graduated Driver Licensing certification form (21-1600).
Drive one year with limits, then with full privileges
Stay off the road from 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. unless an exception applies, and follow the passenger limits. The restrictions end after one year or at 18, whichever comes first.

Frequently asked questions
How old do you have to be for a learner permit in Montana?
14½, if you're taking or have finished a state-approved traffic education program. Online courses don't count. Teens without traffic education apply later at a driver exam station: MVD's page for drivers under 18 gives 15, while the manual gives 16, so check with MVD before you book.
How many questions are on the Montana written test, and what score do I need?
MVD doesn't publish the number of questions or the passing score. You take the written test at a driver exam station by appointment, and your license receipt covers three attempts within one year.
What are the rules for a learner permit (NCLP)?
A licensed parent, guardian or responsible adult, or a licensed adult they authorize, supervises you from the seat beside you, and everyone in the car wears a seatbelt. Teens under 18 hold the permit for at least six months, log 50 hours of practice with 10 at night, and need a clean record for those six months.
What are the limits on a first-year restricted license?
No driving from 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., except for emergencies, farm work, school, church, work or reasons a parent authorizes. Unless a licensed adult is along, you may carry one unrelated passenger under 18 for the first six months and three for the next six. Everyone must buckle up. A first violation brings 20 to 60 hours of community service; a second, a six-month suspension.
When do I get a full-privilege Montana license?
The restrictions end on their own on the date printed on the back of your license, one year after it's issued, or when you turn 18, whichever comes first.
I just moved to Montana. How long can I use my old license?
Up to 60 consecutive days. If your out-of-state license is valid and you have it with you, you can exchange it for a Montana license without a written or road test.
Where can I get the Montana driver manual?
MVD publishes the Montana Driver Manual as a free PDF on mvdmt.gov, and each chapter ends with a short quiz. The questions in these practice tests are separate and written from the manual, with the chapter and page for each one.
