How to get a Missouri driver's license

This is how the Missouri Department of Revenue and the Missouri State Highway Patrol describe getting a first driver's license. Missouri uses a graduated license for drivers under 18, so some steps depend on your age. Check the official pages for the latest rules before you go.

  1. Pass the tests and get your instruction permit

You can apply at 15. Pass the vision, road sign, and 25-question written test with the Missouri State Highway Patrol. A parent, stepparent, legal guardian, or certified trainer then goes with you to a license office to sign a permission statement. Bring proof of lawful status, identity, Social Security number, and Missouri residency. Your test results are not valid for driving until you buy the permit.

  2. Practice with a supervising driver

Applicants under 18 hold the permit for at least six months (182 days) and complete 40 hours of driving instruction with a parent, stepparent, or legal guardian, including at least 10 hours at night. They also need a clean record: no alcohol-related convictions in the last 12 months and no traffic convictions in the last six months. Under 16, the driver beside you must be a parent, stepparent, grandparent, legal guardian, or qualified instructor, or someone at least 25 with three years of licensing and written permission. At 16 or older, any licensed driver aged 21 or older can ride with you.

  3. Pass the driving test

The Highway Patrol gives the driving test. Bring a vehicle with current plates, a valid inspection sticker, working seat belts and horn, two sets of brakes, and proof of insurance. The examiner subtracts points for errors, and losing more than 30 fails you. You can take one driving test per day.

  4. Get your license

After you pass the driving test at 16 or older, take your test record to a license office and buy the intermediate license. A parent, grandparent, or guardian confirms you had 40 hours of practice. The intermediate license limits passengers under 19 and bars driving alone between 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m., with exceptions for school activities, work, and emergencies. At 18, with no alcohol-related offenses or traffic convictions in the last 12 months, you can move to the full license.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum age to get a Missouri instruction permit?

You can apply at 15. First you pass the vision, road sign, and written tests. Then a parent, stepparent, legal guardian, or certified trainer goes to the license office with you and signs a permission statement.

How many questions are on the Missouri written test, and what score do I need?

The Class F written test has 25 multiple-choice questions and you need 80% to pass. The Missouri State Highway Patrol says you can miss up to 5 questions and still pass.

Where do I take the Missouri driver's license test?

The Missouri State Highway Patrol gives the written, vision, road sign, and driving tests. The Department of Revenue issues the permit or license at a license office after you pass. Your test results alone are not valid for driving.

Does the Missouri knowledge test cost anything?

The Highway Patrol says there is no cost for the written test or the non-commercial driving test. You pay for the permit or license at the license office.

Do I need an appointment for the Missouri written or driving test?

The Highway Patrol says you do not need an appointment for the written test or the driving test. Commercial driving tests are the exception. Some test sites also offer appointments for driving tests, and the Patrol recommends using them when they are available.

How many times can I take the Missouri tests?

You can take the written test up to two times in one day. The driving test is limited to one attempt per day. After three failed driving tests, you need written authorization from the Department of Revenue, and you must show proof of extra behind-the-wheel training before you can test again.

Can I use the Missouri Driver Guide during the test?

No. The written test is not an open book test. Its questions come from the laws and driving methods in the Missouri Driver Guide, and our practice questions are written from the same guide.
