How to get a Colorado driver's license

This is how Colorado describes a first license for drivers under 18, based on the Colorado Driver Handbook (January 2025) and the Colorado DMV's pages on minor permits and licenses. Driver education rules change on January 1, 2027, so check with the DMV for current requirements and fees before you go.

  1. Finish driver education

Until the end of 2026, applicants aged 15 to 15 and a half take a 30-hour driver education course, and those aged 15 and a half to 16 can choose the 30-hour course or a 4-hour driver awareness program. From January 1, 2027, everyone aged 15 through 17 needs the 30-hour course.

  2. Pass the written test and get your permit

At 15 or older, pass the written knowledge test online at home, at a DMV office, or at a driving school. Then visit a state driver license office with an adult who signs the Affidavit of Liability (DR 2460). You'll take a vision exam, give fingerprints, and have your photo taken.

  3. Practice for 12 months

Drive only with a licensed driver 21 or older in the front passenger seat. Log at least 50 hours, 10 of them at night. If you're younger than 16 and a half, also complete 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with an approved driving school.

  4. Pass the drive test and upgrade

At 16, take the drive test with an approved third-party testing school. Then upgrade your permit online or in person with your signed driving log. For your first year, passenger limits apply and you can't drive between midnight and 5 a.m. without an exception.

Frequently asked questions

How old do you have to be for a Colorado permit?

You can get a Colorado learner's permit at 15. If you're under 18, a parent, guardian, or another responsible adult 21 or older signs an Affidavit of Liability (form DR 2460), and you'll need to finish driver education first. At the office you also take a vision exam, give fingerprints, and have your photo taken.

What score do I need on the Colorado permit test?

Colorado's rules for the written knowledge test given at driving schools require 80% or higher, which means no more than five wrong answers. The DMV doesn't publish a question count for the test given in its offices. The questions cover the Colorado Driver Handbook, including road signs, impaired driving, driving rules, and safety.

Where can I take the Colorado written test?

You can take it online with the @Home Driving Knowledge Test, at a DMV office, or at a driving school. The @Home test needs a desktop or laptop with a webcam, gives you 60 minutes, and test takers under 19 need an adult proxy. After you pass, you still make an appointment at a state driver license office to get the permit.

Who can supervise a Colorado permit driver?

A licensed driver who is 21 or older has to sit in the front passenger seat. That person needs a valid Colorado driver license, or a military ID together with a valid out-of-state license.

How long do I need a permit before I can get a Colorado license?

If you're under 18, you hold the permit for at least 12 months and log 50 hours of supervised driving, 10 of them at night. If you're younger than 16 and a half, you also need 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with an approved driving school. You can take the drive test at 16, with an approved third-party testing school.

What limits come with a Colorado minor license?

For the first six months, you can't carry passengers under 21 unless a parent or another licensed adult is with you. For the next six months, one passenger under 21 is allowed. Siblings and medical emergencies are exceptions. During your first year you also can't drive between midnight and 5 a.m., except for school, work, a medical emergency, or with a parent or guardian.

What changes for Colorado permits on January 1, 2027?

Under House Bill 24-1021, anyone aged 15 through 17 who applies for a permit on or after January 1, 2027 must finish a 30-hour driver education course first. Applicants aged 18 through 20 will need either the 30-hour course or a 4-hour driver awareness program. If you get your permit before that date, the new rules don't apply to you.
