How to get an Idaho driver's license
This is how the Idaho Transportation Department describes a first license for drivers under 17, based on the Idaho Driver's Handbook (July 2025). Licenses and permits are issued at county sheriff's driver's license offices. Check ITD's website for current fees and requirements before you go.
Get a Driver Training permit
From 14½, buy a Driver Training permit at the county office before your first class. A parent or guardian signs as your liability signer, and you bring proof of identity, Idaho residency, and school attendance.
Finish driver training
An approved course has 30 hours in the classroom, 6 hours watching other students drive, and 6 hours behind the wheel. While you're enrolled, you drive only with your instructor.
Drive supervised for six months
After the course, drive for at least six months without a violation, with a licensed driver 21 or older beside you. Log at least 50 hours, 10 of them at night. A traffic conviction cancels the permit and restarts the clock.
Pass the tests and get your license
From 15, pass the vision screening, the 40-question knowledge test, and a skills test with a private examiner. Until 16, you need a licensed driver 21 or older beside you outside 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. For your first six months, only one passenger under 17 who isn't family may ride with you.

Frequently asked questions
How many questions are on the Idaho written test?
The Class D knowledge test has 40 questions, and you can miss up to six, so you need 34 right (85%). The questions come from the Idaho Driver's Handbook, and the test is offered in English and several other languages, including Spanish and American Sign Language. ITD says online practice tests don't reflect the real test, apart from its own sample questions. Ours are written from the handbook to help you study it.
What happens if I fail a test?
You wait three days before you can take it again, and you pay the test fee again. For the skills test, that means paying both the county fee and the examiner's fee a second time.
How old do you have to be to drive in Idaho?
You can start driver training at 14½ with a Driver Training permit, and you can take the knowledge and skills tests from 15. Anyone under 17 has to finish approved driver training and the Graduated Driver's License program first. At 17 or older, you can pass the knowledge test and get a Class D instruction permit, which lets you practice for a year with a licensed driver 18 or older.
What are the rules for supervised driving in Idaho's GDL program?
After driver training, you drive for at least six months without a violation, with a licensed driver 21 or older in the front passenger seat and no one else up front. Everyone in the car has to be buckled in, and you log at least 50 hours, 10 of them at night. A traffic conviction cancels the permit, and the six months start over with a new one.
What restrictions do new teen drivers have in Idaho?
Until you turn 16, you can drive only between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m. unless a licensed driver 21 or older sits beside you. If you're under 17, for the first six months after you're licensed you can carry only one passenger under 17 who isn't related to you. Drivers under 17 get a warning letter for a first moving violation, a 30-day suspension for a second, and a 60-day suspension for a third.
What happens on the Idaho skills test?
Private examiners approved by ITD give the test, in daylight and in decent weather. Bring photo ID and the car's current registration and proof of insurance; an SR22 doesn't count as proof of insurance. You show the examiner the car's controls and the three arm signals, then drive a set route. Twelve or fewer errors is a pass, but a critical error such as speeding or running a sign ends the test with a fail.
