How to get a Georgia driver's license
This is how the Georgia Department of Driver Services describes getting a first driver's license, based on the Georgia Drivers' Manual. Teens move through three stages: an instructional permit, a Class D provisional license, and a full Class C license at 18. Check dds.georgia.gov for current requirements before you visit a Customer Service Center.
Get your instructional permit
At 15 or older, visit a DDS Customer Service Center with documents proving your identity, citizenship or lawful presence, Social Security number, and Georgia residency. If you're under 18, bring proof of school enrollment and a parent, guardian, or responsible adult to sign. You'll pass a vision test and a knowledge exam with at least 15 of 20 correct on both road signs and road rules.
Practice and meet Joshua's Law
Drive with a licensed Class C driver 21 or older in the seat beside you. Before a Class D license, finish an approved driver education course (30 hours of class or online study, plus 6 hours on the road with a certified instructor or the DDS Parent Teen Driving Guide), the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program, and at least 40 hours of other driving, including 6 at night.
Pass the road test
Once you're 16 and have held your permit for one year and one day, book a road test appointment online. Bring your own registered, insured vehicle. The test covers skills like parallel parking, straight-line backing, and a three-point turn, and you need at least 75% to pass.
Drive on your Class D, then move up to Class C
With a Class D license, you can't drive between midnight and 5 a.m., and passenger limits apply during your first year. At 18, you can trade the Class D for a full Class C license if you've had no major traffic convictions in the past 12 months.

Frequently asked questions
How old do you have to be for a Georgia learner's permit?
You can apply for a Class C instructional permit once you turn 15. If you're under 18, you'll need proof of school enrollment and a parent, guardian, or responsible adult to sign your application. Everyone has to pass a vision test and the knowledge exam.
What's on the Georgia DDS knowledge exam?
The exam has two parts of 20 questions each: road signs and road rules. You need at least 15 correct answers on each part to pass. The road signs part is given in English only, while the road rules part is available in some other languages.
Do I need an appointment for the knowledge exam, and what if I fail?
No. Knowledge exams are walk-in at every DDS Customer Service Center, but you have to start at least 30 minutes before closing. After a first failure, you can retake the part you failed the next day. After a second or later failure, you wait 7 days.
Who can ride with me while I drive on a permit?
You need a licensed Class C driver who is at least 21, able to take control of the car, and sitting in the seat beside you.
What do I need for a Class D license at 16 or 17?
You must be at least 16 and have held your permit for one year and one day. Joshua's Law also requires an approved driver education course (30 hours of class or online study, plus 6 hours on the road with a certified instructor or the DDS Parent Teen Driving Guide), the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program, and at least 40 hours of other driving, 6 of them at night. Then you pass a road test with a score of at least 75%.
What are the rules for a Class D provisional license?
You can't drive between midnight and 5 a.m., with no exceptions. For the first six months, only immediate family may ride with you. In the second six months you may carry one passenger under 21 who isn't family, and after that, up to three.
When can I switch from a Class D to a full Class C license?
At 18, if you've had no major traffic convictions in the 12 months before you apply. U.S. citizens trading in a Class D license don't need any more documents or testing.
