How to get a New Jersey driver's license
This is how the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission describes a first license for teens, based on the New Jersey Driver Manual and the MVC's first license page. Check nj.gov/mvc for current fees and appointments before you go.
Get a permit at 16 or 17
At 16, enroll in an approved behind-the-wheel course and your instructor buys a special learner permit. At 17 you can buy an examination permit yourself. Bring your 6 points of ID and a parent's consent if you're under 18.
Pass the knowledge and vision tests
The knowledge test has 50 questions and you need 40 right. Once you pass, the MVC validates the permit so you can start practicing. If you fail, you can retest in 7 days.
Practice for six months
Drive with a supervisor who is 21 or older and has three years of experience. Log at least 50 hours, 10 of them in darkness, with red GDL decals on the plates and no phone use at all.
Pass the road test, then upgrade at 18
Pass the road test to get a probationary license, then drive for a year under the GDL limits, including no driving from 11:01 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. After that year, and once you're 18, upgrade to a basic license.
