How to get an Illinois driver's license
This is how the Illinois Secretary of State describes getting a first driver's license. Illinois uses a graduated license for drivers ages 15 to 20, so the steps depend on your age. Check the Secretary of State's pages for the latest rules before you go.
Get your instruction permit
You can start at 15. Show proof that you are enrolled in an approved driver education course, or will start one within 30 days, then pass the vision screening and the written exam. Approved courses include at least 30 hours of classroom study and six hours of behind-the-wheel training. From 17 and 3 months you can apply without a course. The permit is valid for 24 months.
Practice with a supervising adult
A driver aged 15 to 17 holds the permit for at least nine consecutive months and logs at least 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night. The supervisor is a parent, guardian, or responsible adult who is 21 or older, holds a valid license, has at least one year of driving experience, and sits in the front passenger seat. During this phase you cannot pick up driving infractions or underage alcohol convictions, and drivers under 19 cannot use a phone, even hands-free.
Pass the exams and apply for your license
Bring your permit, proof of identity, date of birth, Social Security number, residency, and signature, and the signed 50-hour driving log. A parent or guardian must consent if you are 16 or 17. New drivers take a driving exam with an examiner in an insured vehicle with front and rear plates, and any traffic violation during the exam is an automatic fail. Adults aged 18 to 20 who have never been licensed take a six-hour adult driver education course first.
Drive under the graduated license rules
At 16 and 17 you cannot drive from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, or from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. For the first 12 months, or until 18, you can carry only one passenger under 20 unless the passenger is a sibling, stepsibling, child, or stepchild. Keep a conviction-free record for six months before turning 18 to move on to the full license.

Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum age to get an Illinois instruction permit?
You can get an instruction permit at 15. You show that you are enrolled in an approved driver education course, or will start one within 30 days, and you pass the vision and written exams. If you are 17 and 3 months or older, you can apply without taking driver education.
How many questions are on the Illinois written test, and what score do I need?
The Secretary of State says the written exam has 35 questions: 15 on traffic sign identification and 20 that are multiple choice or true-false. An Illinois regulation requires at least 80% correct for a Class D license, which works out to 28 of 35.
Where do I take the Illinois driver's license test?
You take the exams at a Secretary of State Driver Services facility, which the Secretary of State's handbook calls a DMV. The office runs these facilities and issues the license. Use the Facility Finder on ilsos.gov to find one near you.
How many times can I take the Illinois exams?
You get three attempts to pass each exam within one year of the day you paid your application fee. Anyone caught cheating fails the exam and cannot retake it for 30 days.
What vision standard do I need to meet for an Illinois license?
You need visual acuity of at least 20/40 with or without corrective lenses, and at least 140 degrees of peripheral vision. A driver with acuity between 20/41 and 20/70 is limited to daylight driving.
Are the Illinois test questions multiple choice or true-false?
Both. The written exam asks multiple-choice and true-false questions about traffic laws, safety rules, crash prevention, and vehicle equipment. It also asks you to identify signs, signals, and pavement markings. Our Illinois practice tests use both question types.
Can I use the Rules of the Road during the test?
No. Applicants who have an open book in view, look around, or check a phone during the written exam are warned, and anyone caught cheating fails. The exam questions come from the Illinois Rules of the Road, and our practice questions are written from the same book.
