How to get a Wisconsin driver's license
This is how the Wisconsin DMV describes a first license for teens, based on the Wisconsin Motorists' Handbook (2026) and the DMV's graduated license FAQ. Check wisconsindmv.gov for current fees and requirements before you go.
Get your instruction permit at 15
Enroll in driver education, including behind-the-wheel training, and have an adult sponsor sign your application. Pass the vision screening, the 15-question signs test and the 50-question knowledge test with 80 percent.
Practice for at least six months
Drive with a licensed adult who has at least two years of experience, and with an instructor or someone 25 or older after dark. Log 50 hours, 10 of them at night, and finish 30 classroom hours, 6 behind-the-wheel hours and 6 observation hours of driver education.
Pass the road test at 16
Schedule the skills test ahead of time. The examiner checks your car first, then tests turns, lane changes, a Y-turn, a roadside stop and start, parking and backing.
Drive under the GDL rules
For nine months or until 18, carry only one peer plus family, and drive between midnight and 5 a.m. only between home, school and work unless a qualified adult is with you. Phones are allowed only to report an emergency.

Frequently asked questions
How many questions are on the Wisconsin permit test?
The Class D knowledge test has 50 questions, and you need 40 right (80 percent). It takes about 45 minutes. You also take a separate highway signs test with 15 questions, where you need 12 right. Both are free at a DMV customer service center.
Do I need an appointment for the knowledge test?
No. The knowledge and signs tests are walk-in. Leave about 45 minutes before the service center closes. The road test is the one you need to schedule.
Can I take the Wisconsin knowledge test online?
Yes, if you are 15 to 17. The online test costs $10 per try, and a parent or guardian has to watch the whole time on a laptop or desktop with a webcam. You get two tries online. If you fail both, you take it a third time at a DMV service center.
What if I fail the knowledge test?
You can retake it the next day at the earliest. You may take the same test five times in a year; after that, you need special permission from DMV staff.
What do teens need for an instruction permit?
You must be at least 15, be enrolled in driver education including the behind-the-wheel part, and pass the knowledge test, signs test and vision screening. An adult sponsor, usually a parent or guardian, signs your application and accepts responsibility for your driving until you turn 18. The permit is valid for 18 months.
What are the rules for a probationary license?
For the first nine months, or until you turn 18, you can drive alone anywhere from 5 a.m. to midnight with one peer passenger plus family. From midnight to 5 a.m., you can drive alone only between home, school and work. A traffic conviction or a broken restriction adds six months to the restrictions.
What vision do I need?
At least 20/40 in one eye, with or without glasses, and a 70-degree field of vision from the center of each eye. If you don't pass, DMV staff will tell you what to do next, which involves a vision specialist.
