Frequently asked questions
How many questions are on the Massachusetts permit test?
25 multiple-choice questions, and you need 18 right to pass. You get 25 minutes and can't pause once you start. The questions cover rules of the road, road signs, alcohol and drug penalties, suspensions, and the Junior Operator law. You can't use the manual, notes, or any electronic device during the exam. The exam fee is $30, and you pay it again for each retake.
Can I take the Massachusetts learner's permit exam online?
Yes, for a Class D or Class M permit. You start the application online and book a visit to an RMV Service Center, or a AAA location if you're a member, where staff check your documents, test your vision, and take your photo. After that visit you get instructions to take the exam online. If you pass, you print your permit from your online profile.
How old do you have to be for a learner's permit in Massachusetts?
16. Under 18, a parent, legal guardian, the Department of Children and Families, or a boarding school headmaster must give written consent. With the permit you drive only with a licensed driver who is at least 21, has at least a year of experience, and sits beside you. Under 18, you can't drive between midnight and 5 a.m. unless a licensed parent or guardian is with you. The permit is valid for up to two years.
What do teens need before the road test?
You must be at least 16½ and have held your permit for six months in a row without a suspension or violation. You also need a completed driver's education course: 30 hours in class, 12 hours behind the wheel, and 6 hours observing other students. A parent or guardian must attend two hours of the course and certify at least 40 hours of supervised driving (30 if you finished a driver skills program).
What are the Junior Operator License rules?
A Junior Operator License (JOL) covers drivers from 16½ to 18. For the first six months you can't carry passengers under 18 other than immediate family unless a licensed driver 21 or older sits beside you. You can't drive between 12:30 and 5 a.m. without a parent or guardian, and you can't use any mobile device while driving, even hands-free. A first speeding offense brings a 90-day suspension.
What happens if I fail the road test?
You wait at least 14 days before the next test, and you can't take more than six Class D road tests in 12 months. The $35 road test fee is charged again. Your sponsor must be at least 21, have a year of driving experience, and hold a valid license.
