How to get a Connecticut driver's license

This is how the Connecticut DMV describes a first license for 16- and 17-year-olds, based on the Connecticut Driver's Manual and the DMV's teen license and knowledge test pages. Check portal.ct.gov/dmv for current fees and appointments before you go.

  1. Take the Work Zone Safety Course

Finish the free online Connecticut Work Zone Safety Course and print the certificate. Since January 1, 2026, you need it before the knowledge test.

  2. Pass the vision and knowledge tests at 16

Book a test appointment online and bring your identity documents and Form R-229. If a parent can't come, bring the signed parental consent form (2-D). You need 20 of 25 correct.

  3. Complete driver training

Train at a driving school, a high school program or at home with a qualified trainer. Every route includes the 8-hour Safe Driving Practices class, a 2-hour class for a parent and at least 40 hours behind the wheel.

  4. Hold the permit, then pass the road test

Wait 120 days after school training or 180 days after home training, then take the road test in a registered, insured car. For the first year you drive with passenger limits and an 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew.
