How to get an Oklahoma driver's license

This is how Service Oklahoma describes a first license for drivers under 18, based on the Oklahoma Driver Manual (updated November 2025) and the agency's written test, learner permit, and intermediate license pages. Check the Service Oklahoma website for current fees and requirements before you go.

  1. Study the manual and pass the written test

The test has 20 questions taken from the Oklahoma Driver Manual. Take it online with a webcam and microphone, or in person at a Service Oklahoma location. Completing driver education at a school can waive the written test, but parent-taught courses don't qualify for the waiver.

  2. Get your learner permit

At 15 with driver education, or 16 without, visit a Service Oklahoma or Licensed Operator location with your ID, Social Security number, proof of residency, a parent or guardian, and your driver education enrollment or completion papers. You'll take a vision test and leave with a temporary paper permit.

  3. Practice for at least 180 days

Log 50 hours of driving, 10 of them at night, with a licensed driver who is at least 21 and has been licensed for 2 years. Keep your record free of traffic convictions, and complete the free online Work Zone Safe course.

  4. Pass the drive test and get your intermediate license

Schedule a Class D drive test at a Service Oklahoma office or with a designated examiner. Bring your permit, insurance verification, driver education certificate if you have one, a parent or a notarized Affidavit of Driver Training, and your Work Zone Safe certificate. The car must pass an inspection, and no one else can ride along.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions are on the Oklahoma permit test?

The Oklahoma written test has 20 questions on traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving. On the online version you need 15 correct answers, which is 75%, and you have 60 minutes. The online test is only offered in English.

Can I take the Oklahoma written test online?

Yes. You need a desktop or laptop with a webcam and a microphone, since phones and touch screens aren't supported. If you're under 18, an adult has to be there to help verify your identity. You get two online attempts, and after that you take the test in person at a Service Oklahoma location.

What happens if I fail the Oklahoma written test?

By law you wait at least one day before you retest. There's no limit on the total number of tries, but after two failed online attempts the rest have to be in person. Each failed attempt adds a small fee that you pay when your permit is issued.

How old do you have to be for an Oklahoma learner permit?

You can get a Class D learner permit at 15 if you're enrolled in an approved driver education course. Without driver education, the minimum age is 16. With a permit you can drive from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., and only with a licensed driver 21 or older beside you.

When can a teen get an Oklahoma intermediate license?

At 16 with a driver education completion certificate, or at 16 and a half without one. You need to have held your permit for at least 180 days and logged 50 hours of practice, 10 of them at night, with a licensed driver who is at least 21 and has been licensed for 2 years. You also need no traffic convictions in the 180 days before the drive test and a certificate from the free Work Zone Safe online course.

What limits come with an Oklahoma intermediate license?

You can drive from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., unless you're going to or from school, church, or work, or a licensed driver 21 or older sits in the front seat. You can carry one passenger, or only people from your household, unless that licensed adult is with you. The limits come off after 6 months if you finished driver education, or 12 months if you didn't, as long as you have no traffic convictions in that time.
