How to get an Alaska driver's license
This is how the Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles describes a first license for teen drivers, based on the Alaska Driver Manual (revised October 2025) and the DMV's instruction permit and provisional license pages. Check the DMV's website for current fees and requirements before you go.
Get your instruction permit
At 14 or older, bring Form D1, your identity and residence documents, and a parent or guardian's consent if you are under 18. Pass the vision test and the written knowledge test. You can then drive with a licensed driver who is 21 or older in the seat beside you.
Practice for six months
If you are 16 or 17, hold the permit for at least six months. A parent, guardian, or employer certifies at least 40 hours of driving, with 10 of them in challenging conditions such as bad weather or at night. Avoid traffic convictions, because one in the last six months delays the next step.
Pass the road test
Schedule a road test with the DMV or an approved third-party tester. Bring a registered, insured vehicle in good working order. After you pass, you get a provisional license with passenger and 1:00 to 5:00 a.m. limits.
Remove the provisional restrictions
After six months of provisional driving with no convictions, bring a new parental consent to the DMV for a license without restrictions. Otherwise they end when you turn 18. Drivers 18 and older get a license without provisional restrictions.

Frequently asked questions
How old do you have to be for an Alaska instruction permit?
14. The permit is valid for two years and can be renewed once. While you practice, a licensed driver who is at least 21 and has at least one year of experience with the same kind of vehicle has to sit beside you. Applicants under 18 need a parent or guardian's consent.
What is on the Alaska permit test?
The written test covers only what is in the Alaska Driver Manual: traffic laws, safe driving practices, and road signs. You also take a vision test, where you need at least 20/40. The DMV lets you take the written test online. If you fail, you can try again the next day. If you understand English but have trouble reading, someone may read the questions to you, but you have to answer on your own. The Alaska DMV doesn't publish the number of questions or the passing score.
How do I get a provisional license in Alaska?
You must be at least 16 and have held your instruction permit for six months. A parent, legal guardian, or employer has to certify at least 40 hours of driving, including 10 hours in harder conditions such as bad weather or night driving. You can't have any traffic convictions in the six months before you apply. Then you pass the road test and bring a signed parental consent.
What are the rules for Alaska provisional drivers?
You can't carry passengers unless a parent, legal guardian, or someone 21 or older is in the car, though siblings are allowed. You can't drive between 1:00 and 5:00 a.m. unless one of those adults is with you, or you are driving to, from, or for work by the most direct route. After six months without a conviction, you can have the restrictions removed with a new parental consent and a new license. They end at 18 in any case.
What happens at the Alaska road test?
You bring a registered vehicle with proof of insurance, and the examiner checks its equipment first. No one else rides with you and the examiner. You are graded on tasks such as parallel parking or a three-point turn, a quick stop, backing, lane changes, and intersections. Breaking a traffic law or contributing to a crash is an automatic failure. If you fail, you normally wait two business days to try again. Approved third-party testers, such as some driving schools, also give road tests.
When does an Alaska license issued under 21 expire?
90 days after your 21st birthday. Before you renew, you have to pass an alcohol awareness test.
