How to get a New Hampshire driver's license

This is how the New Hampshire DMV describes a first license for drivers under 18, based on the New Hampshire Driver's Manual and the DMV's pages for minors. Check dmv.nh.gov for current fees and appointments before you go.

  1. Start practicing at 15½

There's no permit. You can drive while learning if a parent, legal guardian or licensed adult 25 or older is with you. Driver education classes accept students who are at least 15 years and 9 months old when the course starts.

  2. Finish driver education and 40 more hours

Complete an approved course with 30 hours of class, 10 hours of driving and 6 hours of observation. Log another 40 hours of supervised driving, 10 of them at night, signed by a parent or guardian.

  3. Pass the vision and knowledge tests at 16

Book an appointment, bring your documents, the driver education certificate and a parent's written permission, and pay the fee. You need 20/40 vision and at least 32 of 40 correct answers.

  4. Pass the road test and drive as a Youth Operator

Bring a registered, inspected car and a licensed driver to bring it. After you pass, you get a 60-day paper license, and your Youth Operator license comes by mail. It carries extra limits until 18 and expires at 21.

Frequently asked questions

Does New Hampshire have a learner's permit?

No. New Hampshire doesn't issue learner's permits. From 15½ you can practice driving without a license, as long as a parent, legal guardian or licensed responsible adult who is 25 or older rides with you.

How many questions are on the NH DMV knowledge test?

40 multiple choice questions, each with four answers, and 40 minutes to finish. You need 80%. The test stops as soon as you miss more than 8, so you need at least 32 right. It runs on a touch screen, has an audio option with headphones, and is offered in English, ASL, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Farsi and Mandarin Chinese.

What happens if I fail the knowledge test?

You get an appointment to retest no sooner than ten days later. The same ten-day wait applies if you fail the road test.

How old do you have to be to get a driver's license in New Hampshire?

16. If you're under 18, you also need an approved driver education course (30 hours of class, 10 hours of driving and 6 hours of observation with an instructor), 40 more hours of supervised driving with 10 at night, and written permission from a parent or guardian.

What is a Youth Operator license?

Drivers from 16 up to 21 get a vertical Youth Operator license that expires on their 21st birthday. Under 18, you can't drive between 1:00 and 4:00 a.m., and for the first six months you can carry only one passenger under 25 from outside your family unless a licensed adult 25 or older is along. You also can't use a phone while driving, even hands-free, except to report an emergency.

What do I need for the NH road test?

A registered, inspected vehicle in safe condition and of the right class, plus a licensed driver to bring it to and from the test site. Only you and the examiner ride during the test, which takes about 20 minutes. If you pass, you leave with a 60-day paper license.

Where can I get the New Hampshire driver's manual?

The DMV publishes the New Hampshire Driver's Manual as a free PDF on dmv.nh.gov. Each question in these practice tests names the section and page of the manual it comes from.
