How to get an Ohio driver's license
This is how the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles describes getting a first driver's license, based on the Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws. Ohio has different rules for drivers under 21, so some steps depend on your age. Check the BMV's pages for the latest rules before you go.
Pass the vision and knowledge tests
At 15 years and six months, you can take the vision screening and the 40-question knowledge test, which needs a 75% passing rate. If you pass, go to a Deputy Registrar License Agency within 60 days to buy your Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC), bringing proof of your identity, Social Security number, and Ohio address.
Complete driver education and practice hours
Drivers under 21 take a driver education course with 24 hours of classroom or online instruction and 8 hours of driving time, then log 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night, with an eligible licensed driver. Drivers under 18 hold the TIPIC for at least six months. While supervised, a driver under 16 needs a parent, guardian, or qualified adult in the front seat; at 16 or 17, any licensed driver 21 or older can supervise, except overnight.
Pass the driving test
Once ready, schedule the maneuverability and on-road skills tests at a Driver Exam Station. Bring your TIPIC and a vehicle in good working order, with functioning turn signals, brake lights, horn, wipers, and headlights. Applicants 21 and older who fail must complete an Abbreviated Adult Driver Training Course before testing again; those under 21 wait two days.
Buy your driver's license
After passing both driving tests, go to a Deputy Registrar License Agency with your TIPIC and proof of identity. If you're under 18, a parent or guardian must show ID and co-sign your application; drivers 18 to 20 need a notarized affidavit with their driving log. Your license expires on your 21st birthday if you're under 21, and you can renew it up to 30 days early.
