How to get a Rhode Island driver's license
This is how the Rhode Island DMV describes a first license for teens, based on the Rhode Island Driver's Manual and the DMV's pages on permits and knowledge exams. Check dmv.ri.gov for current fees and reservations before you go.
Take driver education and the knowledge exam
Between 16 and 18, finish the 33-hour classroom course, then pass the 40-question computerized exam. Take it through CCRI if you did the course there, or at the DMV in Cranston by reservation.
Get your Limited Learner Permit
Bring proof of identity, your Social Security card, two proofs of Rhode Island residency and the application. A parent or guardian signs with you, and you pass a vision test (20/40 or better).
Practice, then pass the driving skills test
Drive for at least six months with a supervising driver who is 21 or older and licensed for five years. Log 50 hours, 10 at night. Bring a registered, insured and inspected Rhode Island car to the test. Rental cars aren't allowed.
Move from provisional to full license
With the provisional license, don't drive alone from 1 to 5 a.m. except for the listed trips, and carry only one passenger under 21 for the first year. At 17½, after 12 months and six clean months, you can get the full license.

Frequently asked questions
How old do you have to be for a permit in Rhode Island?
16. If you're under 18, you first pass a 33-hour driver education course and the computerized knowledge exam. A parent, guardian, licensed foster parent or adult spouse comes with you to the DMV to sign the application.
How many questions are on the Rhode Island permit test?
40 multiple choice questions, with a 90-minute limit. The manual doesn't give a passing score. If you took driver education at CCRI, you can take the exam through the college. Otherwise you take it at the DMV in Cranston, by reservation.
What happens if I fail the knowledge exam?
You wait at least 8 days before you can take it again. The computerized exam is offered in English, Spanish and Portuguese, and other languages can be requested as a printed test scheduled in advance.
Can you drive alone with a permit in Rhode Island?
No. A supervising driver who is 21 or older and has been licensed for at least five years must sit beside you. No one else may ride in the front seat, and everyone in the car must wear a seat belt.
When can I get a provisional license?
After you've held the permit for six months with no moving violation or seat belt conviction and passed the driving skills test. A parent or guardian also signs a statement that you've driven 50 hours with a supervising driver, 10 of them at night. If you fail the skills test, you wait at least 30 days.
What are the limits on a provisional license?
You can't drive alone from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m., except to or from work, a volunteer fire, rescue or EMS activity, or a school athletic activity with no school transportation (4 to 5 a.m.). For the first 12 months, you may carry only one passenger under 21 who isn't family. Drivers under 18 can't use a phone, even hands-free.
When do I get a full operator's license?
At 17 and a half or older, once you've held the provisional license for 12 months and gone six months without a moving violation or seat belt conviction.
