How to get an Arizona driver's license
This is how ADOT MVD describes a first license for teens, based on the Arizona Driver License Manual (revised March 2026) and the MVD pages on the permit test, the teen license, and road tests. Check azdot.gov/mvd for current fees and requirements before you go.
Pass the written test
From 15 years and 6 months, pass the 30-question written test at an MVD office, or at home through a parent's AZ MVD Now account if you're under 18. Then visit an office for the vision test and photo, with a parent or guardian to sign.
Practice with your permit
Hold the permit for six months or until you turn 18, driving only with a licensed driver 21 or older beside you. Log 30 supervised hours with 10 at night, or finish a driver education program.
Get a Class G license at 16
Take the road test in an insured, registered vehicle in good condition, with a parent or guardian along, unless driver education waived it. Driver assistance features like parking assist aren't allowed during the test.
Follow the first six months' limits
No driving from midnight to 5 a.m. and no more than one passenger under 18 who isn't a sibling, apart from the listed exceptions. At 18 you can switch to a Class D license online.
Frequently asked questions
How many questions are on the Arizona permit test?
30 multiple-choice questions. You need 80% or better to pass, which means at least 24 right answers and no more than 6 mistakes. The questions come from the Arizona Driver License Manual. At an MVD office you take the test on a touch-screen computer, with audio available, on weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. without an appointment. Teens under 18 can also take it at home through a parent's or guardian's AZ MVD Now account.
How old do you have to be for a permit in Arizona?
15 years and 6 months. After you pass the written test, you bring your documents to an MVD office for a vision test and photo, and a parent or guardian signs your application (or you bring a notarized one). The permit is valid for 12 months, and you may drive only with a licensed driver 21 or older in the seat beside you.
How long do I have to hold my permit?
Six months, or until you turn 18. The six months start when the permit is issued at an MVD office, so passing the test at home doesn't start the clock.
Do I need driver's ed to get a license in Arizona?
It's one of three routes. You can log 30 hours of supervised driving with 10 at night, or 20 hours with 6 at night if you finished a Traffic Survival School or approved defensive driving course. Both of those routes end with a road test. If you complete a high school or private driver education program instead, the road test is waived.
What are the rules for a Class G graduated license?
For the first six months you can't drive from midnight to 5 a.m. unless a licensed parent or guardian sits in front, or you're going straight to or from a school activity, work, a religious activity, or a family emergency. You also can't carry more than one passenger under 18 unless they're your siblings or a licensed parent or guardian is in the front seat. Under 18, a first traffic conviction means Traffic Survival School, a second brings a three-month suspension, and a third a six-month one.
What changes when I turn 18?
You can keep your Class G license or switch to a Class D operator license. You don't need to visit an office: ordering a replacement license on AZ MVD Now switches it to the new class.
