How to get a New Mexico driver's license

This is the route New Mexico MVD describes for drivers under 18, based on the New Mexico Driver Manual and MVD's graduated licensing pages. Check mvd.newmexico.gov for current fees and appointments before you go.

  1. Get an instructional permit at 15

Enroll in an approved driver education course with a DWI component. With a parent or guardian, sign the application at an MVD office, pass the vision test and the knowledge test (70% to pass), and pay the permit fee.

  2. Practice for at least six months

Drive only with a licensed adult 21 or older who has held a license for three years. Finish driver education and log 50 hours of practice, 10 of them at night, signed by a parent or guardian.

  3. Pass the road test for a provisional license

From 15½, with a clean record for the last 90 days, take the road skills exam at MVD or with an MVD-contracted driver education school. Bring a registered, insured car in good working order.

  4. Drive 12 months with limits, then get a full license

Stay off the road from midnight to 5:00 a.m. unless an exception applies, and carry no more than one passenger under 21 from outside your family. After 12 months without problems, apply for an unrestricted license.

Frequently asked questions

How old do you have to be for a learner's permit in New Mexico?

15. You must be enrolled in, or have finished, a driver education course approved by the Traffic Safety Bureau that includes DWI education. If you're under 18, a parent or guardian signs your application. You then pass a vision test and the MVD knowledge test, which an MVD-contracted driver education school can also give.

What score do you need to pass the New Mexico MVD written test?

70% or better. MVD doesn't publish how many questions the test has. You can take it twice a week, even twice on the same day, but after a third failure you wait six months from the date of the first attempt. A passing score stays valid for five years.

Can I take the New Mexico permit test in Spanish?

Yes. MVD offers the knowledge test in English, Spanish, Tagalog, Italian, German, French, Vietnamese and Chinese.

Who can ride with me when I have an instructional permit?

A licensed driver who is 21 or older and has been licensed for at least three years, sitting in the right front seat. An approved driving instructor in the seat beside you also counts.

When can I get a New Mexico provisional license?

At 15½ at the earliest. You need six months with your permit (30 days are added for each traffic violation conviction during that time), a finished driver education course, 50 hours of practice with 10 at night, no traffic conviction in the 90 days before you apply, and a passed road test.

What are the limits on a provisional license?

You can't drive between midnight and 5:00 a.m. unless a licensed driver 21 or older is with you, or you carry a signed statement for work, school, a religious activity, or a family or medical need. Without a licensed driver 21 or older in the car, you may carry only one passenger under 21 who isn't immediate family.

When do I get a full New Mexico driver's license?

After holding the provisional license for the 12 months right before you apply. You also need no traffic conviction in the last 90 days, no violation pending, and no alcohol or drug offense during the provisional period.
