How to get a Louisiana driver's license

This is how the Louisiana OMV describes a first license for teens, based on the Class D & E Driver's Guide and the OMV's New Licenses page. Check expresslane.la.gov for current fees and requirements before you go.

  1. Get a TIP and start driver education

Apply to the OMV for a Temporary Instructional Permit before your first lesson or test. Finish 30 classroom hours and 8 behind-the-wheel hours with a driver education provider.

  2. Get your learner's permit at 15

Pass the vision screening at 20/40 and the knowledge test with 80 percent. Drive only with a licensed adult 21 or older, or a sibling 18 or older, and keep the permit at least 180 days.

  3. Move to an intermediate license at 16

A parent signs that you've logged 50 supervised hours, 15 at night. Pass the road skills test with 80 percent. Stay off the road from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. unless a licensed adult 21+ or sibling 18+ is with you.

  4. Get your full license at 17

Keep the intermediate license until your 17th birthday. After that, you can apply for a full Class E license.

Frequently asked questions

What is on the Louisiana permit test?

The knowledge test has multiple choice questions taken from the Class D & E Driver's Guide. They cover traffic signs and signals, safe driving and Louisiana driving laws. You need 80 percent to pass. The OMV doesn't publish how many questions there are.

Where do I take the knowledge test?

For new drivers, the driver education provider gives the knowledge and road skills tests. You need a Temporary Instructional Permit (TIP) from the OMV before you take the knowledge test or drive during lessons. The OMV issues the TIP from age 14.

How old do you have to be for a learner's permit in Louisiana?

15. Before that, you need 30 hours of classroom driver education and 8 hours behind the wheel. You also have to pass the vision screening (20/40) and the knowledge test with 80 percent. A parent or legal guardian signs for anyone 17 or younger.

Who can ride with me on a learner's permit?

You may drive only with a licensed adult who is at least 21, or a licensed sibling who is at least 18. You keep the permit for at least 180 days and can't move up before you turn 16.

What are the rules for an intermediate license?

You can get it at 16, once a parent signs that you've driven 50 supervised hours, 15 of them at night, and you pass the road test with 80 percent. From 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., you can drive only with a licensed adult 21 or older or a sibling 18 or older. From 6 p.m. to 5 a.m., you can carry only one passenger under 21 who isn't family. You keep this license until 17.

I'm 18 and have never had a license. What do I need?

You don't go through the graduated program. You can apply for a Class E license or a learner's permit after a 38-hour driver's education course, or after a 6-hour pre-licensing course plus 8 hours behind the wheel. You still pass the vision, knowledge and road tests.

How much does a Louisiana driver's license cost?

The OMV lists a Class E license at $32.25 until age 69 and $18.75 from 70, and some offices add a service fee. The license lasts about six years. Check the OMV website for current fees before you go.
