How to get an Indiana driver's license
This is how the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles describes getting a first driver's license, based on the Indiana Driver's Manual. Most new drivers start with a learner's permit and then get a probationary license that lasts until age 21. Check in.gov/bmv for current requirements before you visit a branch.
Get your learner's permit
Apply at any BMV branch at 15 if you're enrolled in behind-the-wheel training, or at 16 without it. Bring documents proving your identity, lawful status, Social Security number, and Indiana residency. You'll take a vision screening and a knowledge exam where you need 80% on both the signs and rules sections. If you're under 18, an adult has to sign a statement of financial liability at the branch.
Practice and log your hours
Drive with a licensed relative 25 or older, a licensed spouse 21 or older, or a driving instructor in the front passenger seat. Log at least 50 hours of supervised practice, 10 of them at night, on State Form 54706. You must hold the permit for at least 180 days, and it stays valid for two years.
Pass the driving skills exam
Take the road test with a BMV examiner at no charge, or with a participating driver training school after you finish its course of 30 hours of theory training and six hours behind the wheel. For a BMV exam, bring your own registered, insured vehicle. If you fail, you have to wait seven days before trying again.
Get your probationary license
You can get a license at 16 years and 90 days with driver education, or at 16 years and 270 days without it. The license is probationary until you turn 21. For the first 180 days, you can't drive between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. or carry passengers without a qualifying adult. When you renew after turning 21, you get an unrestricted license.

Frequently asked questions
What's the minimum age for an Indiana learner's permit?
You can get one at 15 if you're enrolled in a BMV-licensed behind-the-wheel training course and bring the Certificate of Driver Education Enrollment from the school. Without driver education, the minimum age is 16. Either way, you have to pass a vision screening and the knowledge exam.
What score do I need on the Indiana BMV knowledge exam?
The exam has two multiple-choice sections, one on traffic signs and one on traffic rules and safe driving. You need at least 80% on each section, so a strong score on one part can't make up for a weak score on the other.
Do I need an appointment for the knowledge exam, and what if I fail?
No appointment is needed, but you must arrive at the branch at least 30 minutes before it closes to take the exam that day. If you fail, you can retake it the next business day. A passing result stays valid for 180 days.
Who can supervise me while I drive on a learner's permit?
A licensed relative who is 25 or older, your licensed spouse if they're at least 21, or a licensed driver training instructor. The supervising driver has to sit in the front passenger seat.
How many practice hours do I need before the road test?
At least 50 hours of supervised driving, with at least 10 of them at night. You record them on State Form 54706, the Log of Supervised Driving Practice, and a parent or guardian signs it if you're under 18.
What are the rules for a probationary license in Indiana?
Any license issued before you turn 21 is probationary. For the first 180 days you can't drive between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., and you can't carry passengers unless a licensed driver 25 or older is in the front seat. Your child, stepchild, sibling, or spouse can ride with you without that adult.
Can I take the knowledge exam in a language other than English?
Yes. The BMV offers the exam in 19 other languages, among them Spanish, Arabic, Burmese, French, Mandarin, and Vietnamese. If your language isn't offered, you can book an appointment and bring your own interpreter.
