How to get an Alabama driver's license
This is how the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency describes a first license for teen drivers, based on the Alabama Driver Manual (November 2024) and ALEA's graduated driver license page. Check ALEA's website for current fees and requirements before you go.
Get your Stage I learner license
At 15, bring your identification documents, including a certified U.S. birth certificate and a current DL-1-93 school enrollment form. Pass the vision screening and the written knowledge test. You can then drive with a parent, guardian, licensed driver 21 or older, or driving instructor beside you.
Practice for six months
Hold the Stage I license for at least six months. Log 50 hours of behind-the-wheel practice on the ALEA verification form, signed by a parent, grandparent, legal guardian, or certified driving instructor, or finish an approved driver education course.
Pass the road skills exam
At 16, with a parent or guardian's permission, take the road skills exam in an insured, registered vehicle. Pass it to get a Stage II restricted license with the passenger, nighttime, and handheld phone limits.
Move to a full license
At 17, after six months with a Stage II license and no violations, you can get a Stage III unrestricted license. Drivers 18 and older can apply for Stage III directly after passing the road skills exam.

How old do you have to be for an Alabama learner permit?
15. After you pass the written exam, you get a Stage I learner license. You can drive only with a parent, legal guardian, or licensed driver 21 or older in the front seat beside you, or with a licensed or certified driving instructor. The knowledge test covers Alabama traffic laws, road signs, and rules of safe driving, all taken from the Alabama Driver Manual. It runs on automated testing equipment, and you can take it orally if reading is hard for you. ALEA also offers it in Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish, Thai, and Vietnamese. ALEA doesn't publish the number of questions or the passing score.
When can I get a Stage II restricted license in Alabama?
At 16, after holding your Stage I license for at least six months. A parent, grandparent, or legal guardian has to give permission, and you have to pass the road skills exam. What are the rules for Alabama drivers with a Stage II license?
You can't carry more than one passenger outside your family, not counting a parent, guardian, or supervising driver 21 or older. You can't drive between midnight and 6 a.m. unless a parent or guardian is with you or you're going to or from work, a school or religious event, or an emergency. What do I need for the Alabama road test?
A 16-year-old must come with a parent or guardian. Before the test, the examiner checks that your vehicle is safe and has working brake lights, turn signals, and a horn. Bring proof of insurance and the vehicle registration. You can use a rental car only if your name is on the rental agreement as an additional driver.
