How to get a Florida driver's license

This is how the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles describes getting a first driver's license, based on the Official Florida Driver License Handbook. Florida sets different rules for drivers under 21, so some of these steps depend on your age. Check FLHSMV's pages for the latest requirements before you go.

  1. Complete a TLSAE course

If you've never held a driver license in any state or country, you'll need to complete a Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course before you can apply for a learner's or driver's license. This step is waived if you've already passed a driver's education course at a certified DELAP school.

  2. Pass the vision screening and Class E Knowledge Exam

At 15, you can take the vision screening and the 50-question Class E Knowledge Exam, which needs an 80% passing score. You can test in person at a service center, through a third-party administrator, or (if you're under 18) online with a Parent Proctoring Form that is notarized or signed in front of a driver license examiner. Passing gets you your Class E learner's license.

  3. Practice under supervision

Hold your learner's license for 12 months, or until you turn 18, whichever comes first, with no moving violation convictions in that time (one violation is allowed if adjudication is withheld). A parent, guardian, or responsible adult 21 or older must certify that you've logged at least 50 hours of driving experience, including 10 hours at night. While supervised, you can only drive during daylight hours for your first three months, then until 10 p.m.

  4. Pass the Class E Driving Skills Test

Once you've held your learner's license long enough and are at least 16, schedule the Class E Driving Skills Test at a service center or with a driver license exam provider. Bring a registered, insured vehicle that passes a basic safety inspection. Passing lets you trade in your learner's license for a Class E driver's license, though 16- and 17-year-olds still have to follow Florida's driving curfews.

You need to complete a Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course if you've never held a driver license in any state, country, or jurisdiction. If you've already completed a driver's education course at a certified DELAP school, that requirement is waived.
