How to get a Maine driver's license
This is how the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles describes a first license for teens, based on the Maine Driver's License Manual and the BMV's license pages. Check maine.gov/sos/bmv for current fees and forms before you go.
Finish driver education and get your permit
At 15 or older, complete an approved driver education course if you're under 18. Send the permit application, $35 fee, two forms of ID and proof of residency, then pass the vision screening and the 30-question test with at least 24 right.
Practice for six months
Drive with a licensed adult who is at least 20 and has had a license for two years. Drivers under 21 log 70 hours, including 10 at night. The permit is valid for two years.
Take the road test
Mail your driving log to the BMV to be scheduled. Bring your permit, the appointment notice and a registered, inspected vehicle. A parent or guardian signs for a license issued to someone under 18.
Drive with an intermediate license
For 270 days, drivers under 18 carry only family passengers without a qualified adult, stay off the road from midnight to 5 a.m. and never use a phone. The license stays provisional for two years.

How many questions are on the Maine permit test?
The knowledge test has 30 questions, and you need at least 24 right to pass. It covers the rules of the road, signs, pedestrian and bicycle safety, Maine's operating under the influence laws and distracted driving. You also take a free vision screening when you arrive.
How old do you have to be for a learner's permit in Maine?
15. If you're under 18, you must first complete an approved driver education course. The permit is valid for two years and costs $35 for the written exam.
Who can supervise me with a learner's permit?
A licensed driver who is at least 20 years old, has held a license for at least two years, is licensed for the vehicle you're driving and sits in the seat next to you.
What do I need before the road test?
If you're under 21, you must hold the permit for six months and log 70 hours of driving, 10 of them at night, starting after the permit is issued. Instead of the request card, you mail in your driving log. Bring your own registered, inspected vehicle to the test.
When can I get my license?
At 16 if you completed approved driver education, or at 18 without it. Drivers 21 and older don't have to wait six months or log hours before the road test.
What are the rules for a new license under 18?
For 270 days after you pass the road test, you can't carry passengers who aren't immediate family unless a qualified licensed adult sits beside you, can't drive between midnight and 5 a.m., and can't use a phone while driving. Breaking these rules brings a suspension and another 270 days of restrictions.
What is a provisional license?
Your first license is provisional for two years if you get it before 21, or one year if you're 21 or older. A moving violation during that time brings a 30-day suspension on a first offense.
