How to get a Texas driver's license

This is how Texas DPS describes a first license for drivers under 18, based on the Texas Driver Handbook (revised January 2026) and the DPS pages on learner and provisional licenses. Check with DPS for current requirements and fees before you go.

  1. Start driver education

Begin an approved driver education course and finish its classroom hours: 6 hours with the concurrent method or 24 hours with the block method. Many courses give the knowledge exam. If yours doesn't, you take it at the driver license office.

  2. Get your learner license

At 15 or older, make an appointment at a driver license office and bring a parent or guardian, your driver education certificate, a VOE form or diploma, and your identity, residency, and citizenship documents. You'll pass a vision exam and have your photo and thumbprints taken.

  3. Practice for six months

Drive only with a licensed adult 21 or older in the front passenger seat, and don't use a phone at all. Finish the behind-the-wheel part of driver education: 7 hours watching an instructor, 7 hours driving with the instructor, and 30 hours of practice, 10 of them at night.

  4. Take the driving test and get your provisional license

At 16, after at least six months with your learner license, complete the Impact Texas Teen Driver program within 90 days of your driving test and pass the test. Your provisional license comes with passenger, curfew, and phone limits until you turn 18.

Frequently asked questions

What score do I need on the Texas written test?

You need 70 percent or better to pass any Texas knowledge exam. The Texas Driver Handbook doesn't say how many questions are on the test. If you passed the knowledge exam during the classroom part of driver education, you bring proof of it. If not, you take it at the driver license office.

How old do you have to be for a Texas learner license?

You can get a learner license at 15. First you finish the classroom part of driver education, and you pass the vision and knowledge exams. If you're under 18, you also bring a Verification of Enrollment and Attendance (VOE) form from your school, or a diploma or GED.

Who can supervise a Texas learner license driver?

A licensed driver who is at least 21, has at least one year of driving experience, and sits in the seat beside you. That person can't be intoxicated, asleep, or doing anything that keeps them from watching your driving.

When can a teen get a Texas provisional license?

At 16, after holding a learner license for at least six months. You also need to finish driver education, including the behind-the-wheel part, complete the Impact Texas Teen Driver program, and pass the driving test.

What limits come with a Texas provisional license?

Until you turn 18, you can't have more than one passenger under 21 who isn't a family member, and you can't drive between midnight and 5 a.m. unless it's for work, a school activity, or a medical emergency. Drivers under 18 also can't use a cell phone while driving, even hands-free, except in an emergency.

Do adults need driver education in Texas?

Yes, if you're younger than 25. Anyone under 25 has to complete an approved driver education course to get a license. Every applicant, at any age, also completes the Impact Texas Drivers course before the driving exam.

What happens if I fail the Texas knowledge exam?

Your application is held for 90 days, so you can try again. After 90 days, or after three failed exams, you need a new application and a new fee.
