How to get a Tennessee driver's license

This is how the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security describes a first license for teen drivers, based on the Tennessee Comprehensive Driver License Manual and the department's teen driver pages. Check the department's website for current fees and requirements before you go.

  1. Get your learner permit

At 15, bring your identity, citizenship, Social Security, and Tennessee residency documents, plus a school attendance form and a Minor/Teenage Affidavit signed by a parent or guardian. Pass the vision screening and the knowledge test, either at a Driver Services Center or online with a parent as proctor.

  2. Practice for 180 days

Hold the permit for at least 180 days. Drive only with a licensed driver 21 or older beside you and never between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Log 50 hours of practice, 10 of them at night, on the department's certification form.

  3. Pass the road skills test

At 16, take the road skills test at a Driver Services Center. Come with a licensed driver 21 or older and a car with working safety equipment and current registration. Passing gets you an Intermediate Restricted license with passenger and nighttime limits.

  4. Move to a full license

At 17, after a year with the restricted license and no at-fault crash or second seat belt violation, you can get the Intermediate Unrestricted license. At 18, or after you graduate from high school or earn a GED, you can get a regular Class D license.

Frequently asked questions

How old do you have to be for a Tennessee learner permit?

15. You need to pass the vision screening and the knowledge test to get a Class PD learner permit. With it, you can drive only with a licensed driver 21 or older in the front seat, you can't drive between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., and everyone in the car has to wear a seat belt.

What is on the Tennessee permit test?

Multiple-choice questions from Sections B and C of the Tennessee Comprehensive Driver License Manual. The manual says the questions split about evenly among four areas: traffic signs and signals, safe driving, rules of the road, and alcohol and drugs. By law, at least a quarter of them are about alcohol and drugs. The Department of Safety says the online Class D test has 30 questions and you need at least 80% to pass.

Can teens take the Tennessee knowledge test online?

Yes, if you're 15 to 17. A parent or legal guardian proctors the test through the Tennessee Proctor Identification (PID) app. You get 60 minutes, and you can take the online test up to two times. If you fail, you have to wait 24 hours before trying again. The proctor has to come with you to the Driver Services Center when the permit is issued.

What happens if I fail the knowledge test at a Driver Services Center?

You can't retake it the same day. Tennessee requires a one-day wait after a failed knowledge test, and you pay the application fee again each time you fail. Bring all your original documents back when you return.

When can I get an Intermediate Restricted license in Tennessee?

At 16, after holding your learner permit for 180 days. A parent, legal guardian, or driving instructor has to certify 50 hours of practice, 10 of them at night, and you have to pass the road skills test. With this license you can carry only one passenger, unless someone 21 or older with a full license is in the car or a family exception applies. You also can't drive between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. except for work, school events, or with a parent.

When do Tennessee teens get a full license?

At 17, after a year with the Intermediate Restricted license, you can move to the Intermediate Unrestricted license, which has no driving restrictions and needs no extra tests. An at-fault crash or a second seat belt violation adds 90 days to the wait. At 18, or once you graduate from high school or earn a GED, you can get a regular Class D license.
