How to get a Kansas driver's license

This is how the Kansas Division of Vehicles describes a first license for teen drivers, based on the Kansas Driving Handbook and the Division's graduated driver's license and FAQ pages. Check the Division of Vehicles website for current fees and requirements before you go.

  1. Get your instruction permit

At 14 or older, apply at a driver's license office with a parent or guardian if you're under 16. Pass the vision test and the 25-question written test, or bring the DE-99 form from your driver's education course.

  2. Practice for at least a year

Drive only with a licensed adult who is at least 21 and has a year of experience, sitting beside you. Log 25 supervised hours by 15, and 50 hours with 10 at night by 16. A parent or guardian signs an affidavit for the hours.

  3. Finish driver's education and your tests

An approved driver's education course is required for a license at 15. Online courses don't count in Kansas. At 16 and older, pass the vision, written, and driving tests, or bring the DE-99 completion slip.

  4. Get your restricted license

Apply at 15 or 16 after a full year with your permit. Follow the restrictions for your age until you're 16 and have held the license for 6 months. At 17 you can get an unrestricted license.
